Johnston Ranch History

Gene Johnston homesteaded the Johnston Ranch in 1914.

Packing Business

Gene was one of the first Forest Rangers for the Los Padres National Forest.  He supplemented the family income by packing parties into the Sisquoc River to fish.  His son, Lamar, became the guide at the age of twelve and continued on with the tradition.  Emery is now the third generation trail guide and rancher.

About Emery Johnston

Emery started packing commercial trips at the age of 15.  These Outfitter contracts included the U.S. Forest Service, the guiding of hunters and packing game in four states, Geological Survey and various private groups.  He is also a full time cattle rancher.
